In West Bengal India, in the South 24 Parganas District, some 80% of homes lack access to a toilet. Women travel long distances to collect water. This project will contribute to the overall goal of provide drinking water and sanitation for 7,400 people by building wells, household toilets, sanitary blocks and promoting hygiene education for school children. This project addresses the needs of rural communities in the Sundarban Islands, which are extremely poor and isolated.
Facing The Problem
The South 24 Parganas District is one of the largest districts in West Bengal, stretching from Kolkata to the remote river villages along the Bay of Bengal. An estimated 84% of people live in rural areas where farming is the primary source of income and lack of irrigation severely limits the growing season. Access to water and sanitation varies across South 24 Parganas. In urban areas, the Indian government standard of 250 persons for every safe water source has been met. In rural areas, however, the numbers go up to 350 to 400 persons per source. Water points are spread out, forcing women to travel long distances to collect water. Lack of adequate water sources also contributes to poor sanitation in the region. Despite government and NGO efforts, the majority of the population practices open defecation and 80% of village homes remain without toilets.
