Centro Rosaspata Tuli in Bolivia

Location: Bolivia

Amount Needed:$15,549

Benefits: This project will benefit 105 people or 21 families with tap stands.Indirect beneficiaries will be primary and secondary schools, around 120 students and a medical post that tends to patients from local community and outlaying areas

In the community of Centro Rosaspata Tuli, Bolivia, approximately 90% of the local population does not have latrines, and those that do have only very rudimentary and poorly constructed facilities. Typical illnesses in the area consist of diarrhea, cough, pneumonia, and very commonly acute respiratory infections, tuberculosis and rheumatism.  This project will mean that people here will no longer have to carry poor quality water in buckets to their homes every day, diminishing gastro-intestinal and other illnesses, and encouraging better hygiene when it comes to washing hands, pots, pans, plates, utensils, etc.
Facing The Problem
The community is located in the Municipality of Comanche, Department of La Paz, Bolivia (approximately 2.5 hours by bus southwest of La Paz). It is made up of 21 families, or approximately 105 people, and includes a primary/secondary school with about 120 students, and a medical post that tends to patients from the local community and outlying areas. The community lacks any potable water service. The problems encountered are due to the use of contaminated shallow open wells, and water from streams with excessive turbidity, especially after heave rains. During the dry season, the water sources diminish greatly requiring the community members, primarily the women and children, to walk and carry water much greater distances. Approximately 90% of the local population does not have latrines, and those that do have only very rudimentary and poorly constructed facilities. Typical illnesses in the area consist of diarrhea, cough, pneumonia, and very commonly acute respiratory infections, tuberculosis and rheumatism.
