Linking Awareness to Action An Earth Day Network Project
Clean Water and Sanitation for Nicaragua: Payacuca

Location:
Payacuca, Nicaragua
Amount Needed:
$3,160
Benefits:
1160 people who live in this village, representing 145 families
Implementing Organization:
El Porvenir
The people of Payacuca lack clean drinking water and sanitary facilities. They collect their drinking and cooking water from several private watering holes that are, for the most part open, unprotected and contaminated. As a consequence the families suffer from water-borne diarrheal diseases. The women of the village carry water home in 5 gallon buckets on their heads, sometimes as far as 1000 meters. Five gallons of water weighs 40 pounds. They are usually accompanied and assisted by their daughters who carry smaller buckets until they are 10 or 12 years old and then the children also begin to carry a 5 gallon bucket. This community also lacks basic sanitation (latrines).
Facing the Problem:

When the people of Payacuca came to El Porvenir asking for help, they had very clear goals for their community, which they asked us to support: a new gravity flow water system (clean, safe and closer to their homes) and new sanitary facilities. El Porvenir has been working in the Terrabona region for 3 years. The people of Payacuca saw some of our projects in other villages and came to find us, because they wanted to obtain the same improvements in their village, and in the health of their families, that they saw other communities enjoying. The water sites and rights of passage will be acquired from their present owners and title/deed will pass to the community. The systems will bring water into people’s homes, or at least very close to them and will be much closer than the distant waterholes from which the women and girls now can carry water.
